Tools to slow down

Today is a Taurus new moon.

And it has me thinking about how lovely it is to slow down. To actually tend to the soil of what we’re creating rather than bulldozing our way through life on default.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is: why are we rushing?

Why is faster better?

And is it even better at all?

For me this is surfacing around my work. (As so many of my lessons do.) Through pulling my energy back I’ve realized that underneath my impatience and drive is a slow creator. Someone who can create under pressure, but prefers not to.

There’s a breath between my output. Silence, life-lived off screen and enjoyed.

It’s been an inner battle though, especially with the pressures to live up to what is expected of being visible and sharing our work online.

Tools to slow down:

  1. Spend time with the vision you’re working towards

I’m in the process of updating my website. While I’ve been spending my evenings redesigning certain pages and taking new photos, what I’ve been spending the most time doing is connecting with the energy of the website through meditation. What does she (the diary of an empath) want to become? What is her higher vision for presentation + impact? Doing this keeps me connected to the bigger picture – the bigger reason why – which helps make sure the work I'm doing is intentional and aligned.

  2. Enjoy the step-by-step

Another project I’m working on is a set of guidance cards. This project has been in the works for years now, and I’ve committed to completing it. The deck has 42 cards that need proofing and descriptions. Instead of rushing through the process, I’m enjoying working on just 2 or 3 cards a day over the next few weeks to be able to get the full deck to print. There’s something really special about spending time with each card and how I intend for it to support others rather than racing to complete the project just because hustle culture says that's admirable.

  3. See your life as chapters rather than one larger story arc

I came across a quote on Pinterest talking about this concept – of instead of seeing your life as one large story with a middle, beginning and end, see it as a series of chapters or seasons. Looking at my life this way has allowed me to slow down and really enjoy it. In this season right now we are in Montréal for a month, so the chapter for me is ‘Montréal in May.’ In my work I’m in the process of redoing my website and offerings, so it’s ‘falling back in love with the diary of an empath.’ Maybe for you, it’s ‘learning to be a business owner’ or ‘taking back my power’ – whatever it is, seeing life in short chapters and going as far as giving your chapters titles, is an awesome way to fight against rushing through life and missing out on the joy of moments we’re in now.

  4. Let the universe align you

Anytime I need to slow down but worry what it might do to my stability financially, as this work is my job, I remember that the universe is always calling those in need of my work to my work by vibration alone. I have offers created to support a specific person and because like attracts like, as long as I’m open to sales, the universe will connect those who need my offers with them because they are currently looking for this specific support. Remembering this helps us to take our foot off the gas. Align your energy with the knowledge that those in need your work are in the process of finding it right now.
